When it comes to drain cleaning the pipes in your home, we often times do everything in our power to avoid calling the plumber, just so we can save a few bucks. However, in most cases, our DIY methods of drain cleaning or clearing a clogged drain will be more harmful than they are helpful. If you decide to persist in attempting to do it yourself, here are 3 mistakes you should avoid making:
1. Do not use the garden hose. It’s a common misconception that the added water pressure a water hose provides will unclog drains and flush out pipes. Most of the time, all this is going to do is risk damaging your pipes and create a giant headache for you. The garden hose belongs in the garden. Leave it there.
2. Coat hangers do not work. This should go without saying, but do not, under any circumstances, unbend a coat hanger and slide it down your drain in an attempt to unclog it. This is both frustrating and extremely ineffective. If the coat hanger gets stuck in your pipes, you risk causing even more damage to them, and you’re going to have to call the plumber anyways.
3. Chemical drain cleaners don’t work either. In addition to the obvious safety hazards, most chemical drain cleaners that are on the market today simply do not have the power to effectively clear a clogged drain. They do not have the capability to dissolve solid obstructions.
