While we probably don’t have to worry about our pipes freezing just yet, winter will be here soon enough, and with harsh temperatures, pipes are in danger of freezing. Last winter was one for the record books, and most of us would like to forget the extreme cold and mountains of snow that we endured, but those who had to deal with frozen and burst pipes will likely never forget the winter of 2015.

Even though we can dip below freezing this time of year, it is unlikely that the temperature inside homes could fall far enough below freezing to cause pipes to freeze and burst. However, now is the time to prepare so we can prevent the damage that occurs from frozen pipes.

One way to prepare for the upcoming season is to have a licensed plumbing repair company examine your pipes to see if there are any areas that are prone to freezing. Sometimes, homes that have additions have plumbing in areas that are not well insulated, and a plumbing expert can identify whether your pipes are at a higher risk for freezing.

Also, there are many programmable thermostats on the market today that can sync with your smartphone. If you are lucky enough to escape the cold this season by traveling south, some programmable thermostats can keep you abreast of your home’s temperature while you are gone.

Sometimes, people go away for just a day or two and turn the furnace off in an effort to save a few bucks. This should be avoided at all costs. When there is no heat in the home, the winter temperatures can wreak havoc on your pipes. If you go out of town, consider setting the temperature at 55 degrees, which will prevent freezing unless the furnace malfunctions.

At Extreme Plumbing, we are the experts in determining whether your pipes are at additional risk of freezing, and we also know how to correct problem areas so that you never have to worry about finding yourself in the midst of a plumbing emergency.
